Inschrijfduur: how registration time decides who gets the home

What it is

Inschrijfduur is how long you have been registered with a housing portal. For homes allocated by registration time, the person with the longest registration is offered the home first. Wooniezie, Klik voor Wonen and Thuis in Limburg all describe it that way.

Not every home works that way

The landlord picks the method for each home. Besides registration time, the portals we checked also use a lottery (loting), and Thuis in Limburg and Klik voor Wonen also give a home to the first person who responds (eerste reageerder). For lottery homes, registration time does not count at Thuis in Limburg and Klik voor Wonen; at Thuis in Limburg the same goes for first-responder homes. Some homes give priority to a group, such as people from a certain target group.

How long you may wait

The Rijksoverheid gives no single number: the wait differs by location, type of home and price, and sometimes you must count on a few years. Where many people are looking, it can take a long time before you get a home.

Keeping your registration going

At Wooniezie you renew your registration every year, free of charge, and you are reminded a month ahead. Thuis in Limburg also has a renewal option. How the time you built up is treated when a registration lapses is set by each portal and we could not confirm it for all of them, so read the portal’s rules before you let a renewal pass.

When it starts over

At Thuis in Limburg your registration ends when you sign a rental agreement, so for a later move you register again.

Urgency

In an emergency you can get priority with an urgency declaration (urgentieverklaring) from your municipality; in some municipalities it is called a priority declaration. According to the Rijksoverheid, someone with an urgency declaration can respond to a home too. For homes that are available immediately the first person to respond gets the offer, and urgency gives no priority there.
